The tale opens with a bleak tableau of remorse, pandemonium, and hopelessness. Sora dwells with his younger sibling, Ann, and his jocular dad. Ann boasts the role of soloist in her school choir, while Sora boasts culinary prowess. Sora concocts a "honki" (determined) bento for his sibling's gig. As Ann commences her solo, an inexplicable energy rifts reality, disintegrating Ann's very being before everyone's astonished eyes. Sora dashes to her rescue, but he too is ensnared by the ominous ceremony. Spirited away to a realm of gargantuan fungi, neither he nor Ann can predict what lies ahead.
