Commodore Mathew Perry was dispatched to Japan in 1853 by the Holy Britannian Empire to demand the opening up of Japan's borders to the world. To compel the Tokugawa Shogun to comply with the demand, Perry leveraged his Geass power, which commands absolute obedience. Japan ultimately became the Britannian colony of Area 11 and fell into the hands of foreign nations who exploited its resources.
The Black Revolution, a terrorist group, is bent on dismantling Britannia's oppressive regime in Japan. Leading the charge is Lelouch Lamperouge, a teenager who is also a Britannian commander and Zero, the Black Revolution's chief. Lelouch has achieved several triumphs against the Britannians, but his best friend Suzaku Kururugi, who possesses an incredibly powerful seventh-generation Knightmare, poses a considerable threat to the success of the revolution.
