Set in Fuyuki City, a typical Japanese town, the story explores the deadly war that has been kept hidden from the rest of society. Seven sorcerers, known as the "Masters," summon powerful familiars called "Servants," causing them to fight each other mercilessly until only one remains. The last Master standing is said to be granted a wish from the Holy Grail. However, only a select few are aware of when the war began and what the Holy Grail truly is. As the war approaches once again, the protagonist, Emiya Shirou, a young man who lost his parents in a devastating fire is taken in by an adopted father who calls himself a sorcerer. Fueled by admiration for his stepfather, Shirou has been training to become a skilled sorcerer; unfortunately, despite his efforts, he remains inept and lacks sufficient knowledge. Accidentally summoning Saber, the strongest of all the servants, Shirou is reluctantly drawn into the war for the Holy Grail.
