Living in the slums of an affluent town, Rudo and Legto despise the extravagance of the upper class. Rudo daredevils by sifting through the town's refuse, despite warnings from others, in search of useful items that have been discarded in the "Abyss," where garbage and people are cast aside. Rudo's father was accused of murder and banished to the Abyss. One fateful day, Rudo returns home to find Legto on the brink of death and is blamed for the crime. Despite his protests of innocence, Rudo is thrown into the Abyss, where he encounters a nightmarish realm inhabited by monstrous creatures made of rubbish. Rudo is rescued by a man named Engine, who reveals himself to be a "janitor" - a warrior who fights with specialized weapons known as "jinkis." Reluctantly, Rudo agrees to cooperate with Engine in avenging himself and regaining his freedom by struggling their way upward from the Abyss.
