As Nanako Kuwabara, a wandering university student, admires a one-piece dress displayed in a shop window, she can't help but feel awed by its beauty and elegance. In an effort to get a closer look at the dress, she leans against the window, inadvertently soiling it. Hirata, the no-nonsense shop owner, steps out and reprimands her for sullying the newly cleaned glass. Although the store's atmosphere and Hirata's manner are in stark contrast to the dress's high quality, Nanako's infatuation with it remains undeterred.
When Hirata professionally adjusts the dress to fit her perfectly, Nanako is ecstatic, but dismayed when she realizes she can't afford it. However, Hirata offers her a part-time job at the shop in exchange for the dress, much to Nanako's relief, especially since she's about to graduate without having any job prospects. Although Hirata insists that she'll only work for as long as it takes to pay off the dress, it seems likely that Nanako will stick around for much longer than that.
