Living in the countryside town of Itomori, high school student Mitsuha Miyamizu desires a big city life in Tokyo, from which Taki Tachibana, also a high schooler, hails. While Mitsuha is fed up with her rural surroundings, Taki, nurturing a passion for architecture, aspires to become an urban planner.
One night, Mitsuha has a vivid dream in which she is a boy residing in Tokyo, whereas Taki envisions himself as a girl living in the tranquil Itomori. Soon, they realize that these are not mere figments of their imagination but that they genuinely swap bodies every time they drift off to sleep!
