Starting at a new high school elicits joy for Yuuichi Tate, but his happiness swiftly transforms into unease upon discovering that the school is frequently besieged by unusual creatures known as "Orphans." In response to these attacks, the school has formed a group of female fighters labeled "HiME," each endowed with a unique elemental ability. Yet, there is more to it than meets the eye. Every HiME is connected to a specific "Key," a companion they must locate to merge together and create a formidable "Child" capable of destroying the Orphans. To Yuuichi's dismay, he finds himself as the Key to two HiME who are bitter rivals, both of whom happen to attend his school. To top it all off, this is just the beginning of his predicaments.
