Neruma "Neru" Isami is left with nothing but illustrated teachings to aid his martial arts training after his renowned martial artist grandfather goes missing. Despite living in a society that deems hand-to-hand combat unnecessary, Neru grows into a formidable martial arts protege. Neru struggles to fit in and find his purpose as a junior high school student who constantly requests sparring matches with his peers.
Akebi Haiba, an older classmate, throws Neru into a different world when she invites him to join a martial arts academy for young prodigies. Although the relentless training pushes him to his limits, Neru earns praise and admiration in the process. He must hold onto his grandfather's wisdom in the face of newfound notoriety, or he risks losing sight of what truly matters.
