Using his own experiences as a soldier during World War II, Mizuki created Souin Gyokusai seyo!, a work that draws from his personal life to chronicle the last tumultuous weeks of a Japanese infantry unit. This semi-autobiographical account delves unashamedly into the harsh realities of warfare, depicting a raw and unforgiving depiction of combat. Set in the latter part of 1943, the story tracks the actions of soldiers posted to an island who must take their own lives to uphold the honor of their country.
