Otto Carius' memoirs, Tigers in the Mud, have been transformed into a manga solely using watercolors. The story centers around Tiger Ace Carius, a brave German tank commander, who single-handedly took down more than 150 tanks during World War II. In 1941, Carius joined the 20th Panzer Division to fight against the Russian attack, then later transferred to the 502 Tiger battalion in 1943. He fought in Leningrad and Narva, Estonia before eventually being injured in the summer of 1944. At the beginning of 1945, he became the commander of a Jagdtiger company, but later surrendered to the Americans in May. Miyazaki's manga adaptation focuses on Carius' fight against the Soviet army in Estonia and depicts all characters as pigs. The series is known by the subtitle "Mousou Nouto," meaning "Fantasy Note," depicting a wild or crazy delusion from the previous manga "Zassou Note," both published in the same venue (http://www.nausicaa.net).
