The peaceful way of life in the late-medieval land of Barnard has been destroyed by fear as the Dark Ones, monstrous creatures, roam the area, killing without discrimination. The townspeople are too frightened to leave their homes and traveling between towns has become perilous. In response, guilds such as the Guild of Assassins and the Guild of Mercenaries have risen to protect the people. Mercenaries are now necessary to leave one's home or to travel through the wilderness.
One man, Leroy Schwartz, has earned a reputation as an exceptional monster-slayer. Once a high-ranking member of the Guild of Mercenaries, Leroy is now self-employed due to his exceptional skills. Many attempt to hire him, but Leroy is on his own mission with a vow to fulfill. Only Leroy and his sentient long-sword Ragnarok know of this vow.
