Sayoko is a gentle, yet solitary, young woman who is always dressed in a kimono and possesses supernatural powers. Among her abilities is the power to perceive spirits and the skill to liberate them from their death places by letting them haunt her instead. As a result, she's incessantly followed by well-intentioned spirits which only she can observe. Her strange gifts have a way of repulsing regular individuals who would've otherwise befriended her.
Inaba is a destitute college student who accidentally hits Sayoko with his bike. He subsequently learns that his employer has vanished and his shop has gone under. Understandably stressed about his financial situation, Sayoko offers him money to help him along until he lands another gig. Although Inaba isn't particularly fond of the supernatural, he's incredibly grateful to Sayoko, and even overlooks her quirks, including her ghost conversations, to show his appreciation. Unaccustomed to such kindness, Sayoko falls in love with Inaba on the spot. She becomes his neighbor, and, with her spirit friends' help, resolves to win his heart.
