Set in the near future, this is the story of Takurou, a middle-aged man with low self-esteem and a dead-end job. With nothing to live for, he's let himself go, feeling fat, miserable, and painfully lonely. The only brief bit of respite he gets from his melancholic existence is when he occasionally visits a brothel to fulfil his sexual desires, relying on his savings to do so.
One day, a friend introduces him to a virtual reality game called "The Unreal," which becomes his only refuge. After investing over $6000 in equipment, Takurou purchases a virtual girlfriend by the name of Tsukiko, who is designed to be completely devoted to him. However, it quickly becomes apparent that something isn't quite right – Tsukiko has a few defects that no one else seems to have noticed.
