Masahiko Murai's academic performance is lackluster, leaving those around him disappointed, although he is not the poorest student in his class. The title for class failure goes to Yamada, an unpleasant classmate who surprisingly manages to get a girlfriend. Ashamed of his own ineptitude, Masahiko makes up a long-distance relationship with Haruka Mizusawa, his childhood friend, to save face.
The next day, Masahiko is shocked when Haruka shows up in his class, confidently announcing their relationship. However, Masahiko is bewildered because he knows that Haruka passed away five years ago. He is left wondering who or what his new "girlfriend" really is.
