The inmate known as 042 is a participant in an experiment geared toward reintegrating death row convicts back into society. He has been implanted with a microchip that triggers a deadly explosion should he exhibit aggressive behavior or attempt to harm anyone. Assigned as a janitor at a high school, 042 is closely monitored by a team of scientists led by Dr. Shiina. Throughout the story, 042 faces numerous challenges as he struggles to adapt to a society that has cast him aside. As he interacts with others, his transformation begins to affect those around him. Ultimately, the experiment raises a question that lingers: can a killer who has already been convicted ever truly assimilate into mainstream society?
