Sixteen "Ultimate" students gather at Hope's Peak Academy for the start of a new year, but upon entering the building, they suddenly pass out and awaken in a classroom. Usami, a pink and white bunny, greets them and announces they will embark on a school trip to an island. However, Monokuma, a black and white bear, disrupts their plans and reveals they must participate in a "School Killing Trip." In order to leave the island, a student must commit murder without being caught. Nagito Komaeda, the "Ultimate Lucky Student," initially believes none of them could commit such an act, but the high stakes may override his hope with despair.
