Years ago, Souta Tawara decided he would not inherit his family's udon restaurant and left his hometown in Kagawa Prefecture for Tokyo. However, after his estranged father's passing, he returns to the place he once desperately wanted to escape. With both parents gone, Souta expected nothing more than an empty house and restaurant. To his surprise, he discovers a scruffy little boy sleeping inside a cooking pot with a sack of flour as a pillow. As it turns out, the boy is none other than Kagawa's legendary tanuki, a shape-shifting raccoon dog that has lived in the area for years. Souta cannot bear to leave the boy alone and decides to take care of him, naming him Poko.
As he remains in Kagawa, Souta is flooded with memories of his childhood and the regret surrounding his unresolved relationship with his father. Udon no Kuni no Kiniro Kemari details how Poko's innocent nature unwittingly helps Souta come to terms with his past, leading them on a journey towards a new future together.
