Returning home as a prisoner of war from an American camp during the Second World War, Jirou Tenge discovers his once-influential Japanese family in ruins due to the devastating social impacts of the war. His older brother is resolute in preserving the family's remaining inheritance following the government's land reallocation, going so far as to offer his wife to his own father in exchange for his approval. The rest of Jiro's family is similarly entangled in bribery and corruption, with Jiro himself coerced into spying for America after enduring tremendous mental anguish as a POW. It is now up to the family's youngest daughter, Ayako, to bear the weight of their collective wrongdoing.
