Haruto Touma, or Haru as he was commonly known, met a bizarre end when a black cat named Kuro accidentally knocked him over, causing him to suffer a fatal head injury. Soon after, Shiro, an angel, appeared before him and expressed remorse for being responsible for the incident. It was revealed that Kuro was a demon who could transform and alongside Shiro, was scouting for someone to assume the role of a shinigami who collects the souls of wrongdoers. Though Haru's demise was unplanned, they gave him an offer to become a shinigami.
Six months prior to his death, Haru was a victim of an arson attack that claimed the lives of his family and erased his memory. He struggled to come to terms with the tragic loss and lived a life of detachment and guilt. Upon reviewing his past, the angelic duo proposed that Haru could potentially recover his memories and travel back in time to the day of his family's demise if he agreed to work as a shinigami, collecting the souls of those who evaded justice. With that incentive, the three reached an agreement. Haru found a new purpose in death that was previously absent in his life.
