Midorimaru Matsunoki, a loyal follower of Hideyoshi Toyotomi and the only inheritor of Lord Matsunoki Mumeharu, becomes involved in his father's covert scheme to construct a new fortress. Along his journey, he encounters Tae, a female educator from the lower class, who becomes his lover. Surprisingly, Midorimaru's actions also affect the striking highborn Yayoi, who harbors deep feelings of both passion and animosity towards him, and samurai Fujinosuke Murasaki, the primary architect of the castle, in unforeseeable ways.
