With freshman year looming, Kanji Sasahara must decide whether to finally join the otaku club he's always dreamed of. Meanwhile, Saki Kasukabe grapples with the challenge of turning her hardcore anime-loving boyfriend, Kousaka, into a "normal" guy. Despite Saki's failed attempts, both Kousaka and Kanji end up joining Genshiken - The Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture. But it's Kanji who succeeds where Saki couldn't. Undeterred, Saki decides to follow Kousaka into the club's various activities - from cosplay and conventions to gaming and anime collecting - and discovers a comical world of Japanese fandom she never anticipated.
