Within a futuristic military, promotions and high wages are granted to those who emerge victorious in battles. Grey, a member of this armed force, stands apart from others due to his infrequent speech. However, within this society, ascending to citizenship - which represents an escape from the widespread misery inflicted upon most citizens - proves to be a formidable challenge, achieved by no more than three percent of troopers. In spite of surviving several perilous battles and earning the moniker of "Grey Death," Grey harbors doubts regarding the worth of his allegiance to a society that he finds questionable.
