During the midst of an industrial revolution, a menacing creature emerges, impervious to defeat unless its iron-protected heart is pierced. Transmitting a vicious bite, it transforms humans into aggressive undead entities, labeled Kabane. To safeguard themselves from these monstrosities, people construct stations on Hinomoto Island in the far eastern region, traveling via steam-powered Hayajiro locomotives to access these enclosed havens. A resident of Aragane station, Ikoma dedicates himself to forging a weapon known as Tsuranukizutsu, intent on destroying the Kabane. His plans are set into motion after encountering Mumei, a girl exempt from mandatory Kabane inspections. When Hayajiro unexpectedly spirals out of control, Ikoma and Mumei unite to fight against the infected staff and rampant Kabane, seizing the long-awaited opportunity to put Ikoma's weapon to the test.
