During the 13th century, Genghis Khan and his Mongolian army rapidly conquered new territories, including Goryeo (Ancient Korea). In one of the first encounters between the Mongolian and Goryeo armies, the latter suffered a crushing defeat. A defeated Goryeo general, who survived the battle, retreated into a forest at night and encountered a kumiho (a mythical nine-tailed fox).
