Maison Ikkoku, a dilapidated boarding house in Tokeizaka, is home to quite the colorful cast of residents, including Yusaku Godai, a 20-year-old student with high aspirations. Feeling frustrated with all the disturbances that arise from the boisterous boarders, Yusaku decides to leave. Right before he departs, however, Kyoko Otonashi appears out of nowhere, introducing herself as the newly appointed property manager.
As soon as Yusaku lays eyes on Kyoko, he is completely smitten with her and quickly ditches his plans of vacating. Instead, he remains at Maison Ikkoku and endeavors to earn Kyoko's affection. Nevertheless, he discovers that Kyoko is still deeply grieving the loss of her spouse and has absolutely no desire to start dating or marrying again. Despite his infatuation, Yusaku empathizes with Kyoko and strives to raise her spirits, enlisting the help of his fellow tenants at Maison Ikkoku. Ultimately, his overarching aim is to demonstrate to Kyoko that he is more than just an occupant, but instead someone who can genuinely be her partner in life.
