Sotoba, a village where nothing of significance ever occurs, is transformed when an elegant European-style mansion appears on a hilltop. Although Megumi Shimizu, the village's most outgoing inhabitant, yearns to leave the uneventful town, her interest is piqued by the cultured and refined occupants of the mansion. However, her visit to the mansion has devastating consequences - the next day she is found weak and anemic, bearing strange bite marks that signal the beginning of a deadly epidemic that ravages the village.
As the bodies pile up, the village's doctor, Toshio Ozaki, priest Seishin Muroi, loner Natsuno Yuuki, and siblings Kaori and Akira Tanaka, band together to investigate. But the deeper they delve into the mystery, the more horrifying the truth they uncover. The dead may soon outnumber the living, and the group realizes they may not be equipped to cope with the dire reality they must face.
