After making an excessive amount of rice, Shuuko Yakumo - a 28-year-old widow - chooses to give some to her latest neighbor, Shouhei Yamato. Yamato, a lively participant in his high school's baseball team, has an insatiable craving for food that brings back loving recollections of Yakumo's late spouse, rekindling her passion for cooking.
Since their initial meal, Yakumo has been continuously asking Yamato over to share meals at her residence, gradually nurturing their companionship through their shared love of food and baseball.
