To escape the monotony of her life as the older sister to a newborn and stepchild to a new mother, Shimana Kameko decides to skip school and flee from home. While searching for a new place to call home, Shimana stumbles upon a man, who dressed in Japanese traditional attire, has been locked out of his own home. By aiding him in returning, the man offers Shimana a room in his home with certain terms and conditions, which include the discovery of the house key, exposing the reason why she left, and experiencing a specific dream and love interest.
Once she fulfills the requirements, Shimana moves into the boarding house, where Taiga Fujiwara, an enthusiastic drinker and landlord, lives alongside Zen Nakajou, a panda-enthusiastic student, and Asahi Tatsugae, an amiable classmate with an infectious smile. With a bevy of attractive men surrounding her, Shimana revels in the excitement of coexisting with them.
The series' first volume, "Heart-Shaped Tomatoes," chronicles Shimana's journey as she navigates her relationships with her housemates while concurrently attempting to find a place in the world. Shimana forms unique bonds with each of her housemates amidst misunderstanding and wistful moments, ultimately realizing that genuine happiness can manifest in unforeseen ways.
