Anne and Gilbert, once eternal lovers, are now married and blessed with six children. They reside in an old village on Prince Edward Island, near Rainbow Valley- a breathtaking location that their children adore more than any other place. Mr. Meredith, the new minister, moves in nearby with his four children, who quickly become good playmates for the Ingleside children, making the valley an even livelier place. Suddenly, a girl named Mary appears out of the blue, seeking refuge for reasons unknown.
