Exhausted from overworking, Souta Matoi is drained and even a night's rest barely relieves his fatigue. In a daze on his way home, he stumbles upon a koudan show, a traditional Japanese storytelling event. The upbeat storyteller's voice, picturesque setting, and lively performance take Souta back to happier times. But suddenly, the storyteller, Kihachi Toujou, transforms into a cat.
Souta witnesses a genuine bakeneko, a spirit monster in feline form, and as a result, he is forbidden to live. Kihachi is in the same position since he allowed a human to witness his cat form. But there's a way out of this situation – Souta can wed Kihachi.
