Bravely Default takes place in Luxendarc and follows the journey of four young heroes. Agnès Oblige, the wind vestal, is searching for the wind crystal which vanished in darkness. Alongside her are Ringabel, an amnesiac vagrant, and Edea Lee from the Duchy of Eternia. Edea is on a quest to safeguard the world from evil, while Tiz Arrior, who saw his hometown Norende ruined by a chasm, also joins the group.
After seven days since the destruction of Norende, Tiz explores Norende Ravine for survivors, but he comes across Agnès and her cryst-fairy companion, Airy, instead. Airy has been assisting Agnès in revitalizing the corrupted crystals responsible for natural disasters across Luxendarc. Nevertheless, the Knights of the Eternian Sky are chasing Agnès since they don't want the crystals to awaken. Although initially reluctant, Tiz persuades Agnès to let him help her with the mission. Soon after, Ringabel and Edea also join them. Edea is shocked to discover that Agnès is not malevolent, unlike what she had to anticipate. She also despises the Sky Knights' dishonorable deeds.
