In a futuristic world, magic has been recognized as a legitimate discipline in the scientific community. A small group of individuals with innate magical abilities are trained and assigned to a government agency as magic enforcers. Technological advancements have enabled bringing the dead back to life, but at the cost of sacrificing another life. In cases where the court rules it justifiable, a murderer's life is sacrificed to revive the victim. However, this process leads to the revival of the deceased, referred to as the Returner, with a psychological affliction called the Bug. Negative emotions such as anger, jealousy, and revenge are magnified, and if left unchecked, the Returner turns into a dangerous monster. The sole responsibility of the magic enforcer is to eliminate the Bug.
Deep Searcher, also known as Nagumo Kento, is an accomplished magic enforcer whose specialty is drawing out the evil using his unique powers. He is joined by a new partner, Evil Eater, also referred to as Amagi Yoko, a prodigious rookie recently graduated from the academy. Yoko's expertise as a Debugger involves disposing of the evil that Kento extracts. Yoko's skill sets are remarkable, even by the proficient magic user's standards, and her prowess shocks even the seasoned members of the magic enforcers. Together, Yoko and Kento confront the seeds of evil to ensure Returners enjoy their second chance at life.
