Kwak Chung was born an orphan in Chengdu and suffered from polio in his childhood, resulting in a disability in one leg. He sold rice cakes to merchants travelling West to make a living and despite facing discomfort due to his disability, he persevered. One day, he stumbled upon a lamp hoping to sell it for profit, but was surprised when a genie appeared and offered to grant him three wishes.
Seeking assurance from the genie, Kwak Chung asked, "Will you fulfil all my wishes?"
To which the genie confirmed, "Absolutely."
For his first wish, Kwak Chung asked for great wealth in the form of gold, silver, silk, and jewelry. His second wish was to transform into a tall, muscular, aesthetically pleasing man. Lastly, he wished to return to a time before he encountered the genie.
Thus began Kwak Chung's never-ending cycle of returns.
