During her middle school years, Misora Hoshino partook in a pastime of daydreaming about her favorite anime characters and reading boys love literature with her peers. When she noticed a shift in Ryuunosuke Tatsumi's behavior, her violent classmate, due to his new stepsibling, as well as the brothers' starkly different appearances, she felt compelled to create a novel about them. However, her peers uncovered the contents of the novel, leading to Ryuunosuke's sudden transfer and leaving Misora with lingering guilt.
Coincidentally, Ryuunosuke, now going by Ichinose, transfers to Misora's high school and becomes her neighbor. The two are reunited in the same class, and Misora sees this as the perfect opportunity to apologize. To her surprise, Ryuunosuke bears no ill will towards her and confesses that his affection towards his brother is purely innocent; if he has any romantic feelings, it's towards Misora herself. Though she initially harbors feelings of regret, Misora dismisses her remorse after meeting the older Ichinose for the first time, who acts towards her as if he were a jealous partner resenting his competition rather than addressing her politely.
