Hiroshi Kuzumi, a teenage boy of 16 years, has just relocated to a mountainous town that comprises both new and old streets separated by a river, and has many enigmatic local traditions still in existence. While Hiroshi is quite perplexed and content with his new life, one individual, namely Kushinada Nemura, who is a member of the class committee, keeps a certain distance from him. In their infrequent meetings, she offers him a cautionary suggestion: "Avoid the old streets."
