This book includes two distinct narratives. The first story, titled "Poppoya," features protagonist Satou Otomatsu, a station master stationed in a remote village in Hokkaido. With a retiring station and an aging population, Satou's future is uncertain. However, a chance encounter with a young girl sets in motion a series of events that forces him to reflect on his career as a railroad man and the sacrifices he has made in his personal life.
The second story, "Love Letter," follows Goro, a recently released convict who receives word that his wife has passed away. Goro has no memory of his spouse until he recalls marrying a Chinese woman for her money and a visa to work in Japan. Despite initially only taking the trip to Chiba to collect the financial reward, Goro discovers a letter from his late wife that reveals her true character and kind-hearted nature. This newfound understanding allows him to empathize with her dreams and fears for the future, although a future they will never share.
