The book is a compilation of four Chinese folklore tales. Among them, A Mercy Destiny, The Madman of the Flowers, and The Origin of Love share common characters, namely Dai-Chun, Song Gui-Xiang, and Ru-Chun, set in the Tang Dynasty. Dai-Chun and Song endeavor to assist their acquaintances in resolving their issues of conceit, haughtiness, self-centeredness, and jealousy. However, Song's innocence causes more complications.
