A young woman, determined to uncover the true story of the Demon of the Shinsengumi, Vice Commander Hijikata Toshizou, seeks out elderly Nagakura Shinpachi in 1912. Hijikata's story starts in 1859 when he was an ambitious and violent youth. He aimed to perfect his swordsmanship skills and sell his family's medicine. In search of more powerful opponents, Hijikata encounters his future Shinsengumi comrades. Among them is Kondo Isami, who impresses Hijikata with his excellent fighting abilities.
