After growing weary of William's constant daydreaming about venturing to the east, his mother fears he will settle down and miss out on discovering the marvels of the world. With the aid of his companion Yan, William covertly boards a Dutch vessel en route to Nagasaki, Japan. However, he remains unaware of the voyage's duration, and when the ship endures a tempestuous storm, he becomes stranded in his secret alcove and is hurled into the sea. Only to revive and notice a curious girl gazing down at him.
