The Sonic the Hedgehog Story Comic, a promotional comic series in three volumes, was distributed with the Japanese publication Mega Drive Fan. It narrates the tale of the initial game where Sonic saves his animal friends from the villainous Dr. Eggman while traversing South Island. As it was fashioned before the game's official launch, the comic highlights outdated ideas and preliminary material such as Sonic's position as a lead singer in a band and his expedition through Sparkling Zone and Clockwork Zone. In its final edition, the comic reveals the origins of Sonic as the beloved mascot of a passed away pilot.
