Kevin Flynn, the innovative software engineer and CEO of ENCOM International, disappeared in 1989, leaving his son Sam in charge of the company two decades later. Sam shows little interest in his role, aside from playing an annual trick on the board of directors. One day, Alan Bradley - Kevin's former colleague and now a senior executive at ENCOM - urges Sam to investigate a peculiar message discovered at his father's deserted arcade. Following the lead, Sam uncovers a secret computer laboratory and finds himself unexpectedly transported to the Grid; the virtual world crafted by his father.
